Sinker EDM & Wire EDM in Autodesk Fusion
AURON modules automate electrode design, contour recognition and EDM programming in Fusion, right through to NC code output.
From 3D model straight to the EDM program
Up to 50% faster
Electrode design, contour preparation and CAM programming run automatically. Work up to 50% faster.
Parameters from the model
No manual intermediate steps. Parameters are taken directly from the model – consistent and traceable.
Faster onboarding
Guided workflows instead of individual workarounds. New staff become productive faster, results stay consistent.
Add-on modules for your EDM processes
As standard, Autodesk Fusion has no dedicated EDM functions. Every electrode and every toolpath has to be built manually using general functions. The AURON modules are installed as an add-in in Fusion and take over these steps.
Sinker EDM: automatic electrode design
The module automates the workflow in Fusion from cavity analysis to the finished EDM program. You only need a few clicks – the module does the rest.
- Select the EDM surface and holder, and enter the spark gap in the dialog. The electrode is created automatically with its base, reference and datum points.
- The electrode is passed to the CAM workspace with prepared datum points. The milling program for electrode manufacturing can be sent straight to the CNC machine.
- The EDM program is prepared and output to the EDM machine via integrated post processors.

Automate wire EDM in Fusion
The module simplifies programming for wire EDM machines. Only a few manual inputs are needed – the rest runs automatically.
- Contours, features and start holes are recognised automatically, even with several geometries on one workpiece in a single step. The toolpaths are generated from this.
- 4-axis machining and the rotary axis are integrated in the module.
- The EDM program is transferred to the EDM machine via integrated post processors.

A look inside the modules
Post processors for your EDM machine
The modules output NC code for machines from these manufacturers via integrated post processors. If yours is missing, we will develop the post processor.

FAQs
Questions and answers about the AURON modules for sinker and wire EDM in Autodesk Fusion.
Yes, with the AURON modules. As standard, Autodesk Fusion (formerly Fusion 360) has no dedicated EDM functions: you build electrodes, contours and toolpaths manually using general design and CAM functions. The modules are installed as an add-in in Fusion and take over these steps for sinker EDM and wire EDM.
The sinker EDM module combines electrode design, electrode manufacturing and the EDM program into one continuous workflow.
Without the module, you analyse the cavity, derive the electrode and spark gap manually, design the negative shape and add the holder, reference and datum points to the electrode. You then program electrode manufacturing and the EDM process separately. A separate post processor generates the NC code for the EDM machine.
With the sinker EDM module, you select the EDM surface and holder and enter the spark gap in the dialog. The module derives the electrode with its base, reference and datum points and passes it to the CAM workspace. You send the milling program for the electrode straight to the CNC machine, and the EDM program goes to the EDM machine via integrated post processors. This reduces the time needed for electrode design from 30 to 45 minutes to 5 to 15 minutes.
The wire EDM module analyses the workpiece in one pass and creates all the data for wire EDM in a single step.
Without the module, you prepare the top and bottom contours for each geometry on the workpiece individually, define the start hole and threading point, and program the toolpaths and cutting sequence. A separate post processor generates the NC code.
With the wire EDM module, contours, features and start holes are recognised automatically, even with several geometries on one workpiece. The module generates the toolpaths from this and outputs the NC code to the EDM machine via integrated post processors.
With EDM machines from all major manufacturers, including Exeron, Makino, MB Maschinen, Mitsubishi Electric, OPS Ingersoll, Sodick, United Machining (AgieCharmilles), Vollmer and Zimmer & Kreim. The modules output the NC code via integrated post processors. A post processor translates the toolpaths from Fusion into the language of the respective machine controller. The overview above shows which manufacturers are supported for sinker EDM and which for wire EDM. If your machine is missing, AURON will develop a custom post processor for you.
